Leading Edge

About Us

Leading Edge Snc is a privately held company formed in 2005 to deploy innovative Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and be a solutions provider for the electronic design community. Started mailny as EDA solutions provider, along the year Leading Edge has adapted its mission and is today a service provider in the area of the verification/analysis either at IC (for instance using SystemVerilog) or at PCB level (focusing on Signal and Power Integrity analysis)

Based to the north-east of Milan, thanks to a central position and excellent flight connections, we have easy access to the major centers of electronic design in Europe.

The founders, Pietro Vergine and Nigel Woolaway, have over 30 years of combined experience in the EDA industry working for major players such as Mentor Graphics, Synopsys and Magma Design Automation.

Management Team

Nigel Woolaway, Co-President

Nigel Woolaway was awarded a bachelors degree in Communications Engineering from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1981. He first became involved in EDA and library development while at Standard Telephones and Cables (now Nortel) in 1983 and was one of the first European users of the Valid SCALD system. He subsequently managed development of workstation libraries and semicustom design flows at STMicroelectronics before joining Mentor Graphics in 1992 as technical leader of the ASIC Vendor Program in Europe. This group was formed with the specific aim of providing technical support to ASIC Vendors building Mentor-based design flows. In 1995 he took on a similar role in Synopsys where he managed the European Semiconductor Vendor Program until 2004. In 2004 he joined Magma Design Automation to work on semicustom library characterizationproducts. In 2005 he joined forces with another EDA veteran, Pietro Vergine, to form Leading Edge and exploit their extensive experience in introducing new tools and methodologies to the marketplace.

Pietro Vergine, Co-President

Pietro Vergine was awarded a degree in Electronics from the Politecnico di Milano in 1988. He immediately became involved in EDA as a user of Mentor Graphics products while working as a design engineer at Italtel. In 1993 he joined Mentor Graphics as an application engineer where he later took on various project management roles from 1995 to 1997 and subsequently became technical leader of a group of 6 application engineers. In 1997 he joined Synopsys as an application consultant, initially specializingin technical support for Transistor level tools such as FastSpice simulator, Parasitic extraction, Reliability Analysis Static Timing Analysis. In 1998 he took on the role of resident engineer, providing dedicated on-site support for a major OEM. In 2000 he was appointed manager of technical support for the same OEM and was charged with building a dedicated support team. By 2005 he had successfully built the team to 15 resident engineers distributed around the globe. At the end of 2005 he founded Leading Edge together with Nigel Woolaway to exploit their combined experience of the EDA world.
